He was the son of a prominent Rotterdam-based business family. Muller started his career as a businessman, trading in East and West Africa as the interim manager of Handels Compagnie Mozambique. Between 1882 - 1883, together with Snelleman, he travelled to Zanzibar visiting trading stores. Once the business trip was concluded they walked through present-day Mozambique and Zululand, collecting ethnographic artefacts and writing reports on the societies and people they encountered on their way. Articles of the trip were published in Dutch journals and newspapers. (Source: Wikipedia).
